Sunbeam 7530 Rocket Grill Electric Grilling Appliance Review

Sunbeam 7530 Rocket Grill Electric Grilling ApplianceI bought my Rocket Grill about a week ago from the TV add. I usually shop Amazon when I see something on TV that I like but this time it looked so good I just called up and did the deal on the spot. I could have saved a few bucks had I gone to ...zon first and ordered on line.

Even so I am very pleased with the item to the point I wanted to share the experience with those now thinking of buying one.

To me the best feature is that just like the other reviews, there is no clean up. I figured that was a bit too good be true and it almost is. So far, the only clean up needed was to sponge off the lid. A very slight residue of oil will settle on the inside of the lid as the heated steam from the cooking process rises and passes through. The lid is extremely easy to remove so this kind of clean up is almost negligible.

Let me tell you, I've tried a bunch of kitchen grilling systems. There are those where I would set it and forget it, infra-red convection whiz-bang thingies with huge plastic bell shaped lid, toaster ovens of different varieties and a score of others. They all have their cooking gimmicks and most do a good job of cooking as promoted. BUT THE MESS they made always ruined it. Clean up took longer than the cooking did so after a few tries, those devices were stored and not used. Eventually they would be given to a family member (heh), sold or donated.

The Rocket Grill is a keeper and I will use it regularly. Last night I made two frozen filet mignon steaks today I heated up previously cooked rotisserie chicken, made some hot dogs and a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.

Haven't needed to wash a thing. The secret is in the parchment pouches into which the food is put and within which the food is cooked. Essentially all the grease, fat, spatter, etc is retained inside the bag. Nothing but the steam gets out. No spatter, no cooked on grease, no crumbs, no kidding !!! Nuff Said ... get it !!! You'll love it.

Masterbuilt 20070106/20070910 30-Inch Electric Smokehouse Smoker, Black Review

Masterbuilt 20070106/20070910 30 inch Electric Smokehouse Smoker, BlackThe Masterbuilt smoker is a wonderful product for the price. Whether you're new to smoking, or an experienced smoker who wants a less hands on, labor intensive smoke, this is simply the best you can get for the $$.

Pros:
1. Digital thermometer: If you've smoked much, you know keeping the smoker at the right temperature is often what takes the most attention. As an electric smoker with a built in thermometer, you can set your preferred temperature and then just focus on keeping the woodtray filled, the contents mopped, and you're good to go. (You will still want to use a digital thermometer on the meats themselves to check their internal temperatures, but that's a different matter.)

2. Well insulated: Unlike a traditional side smoker, bullet or most other form factors, the masterbuilt is nicely chunky and really doesn't care overly what the outside temperature is at (within reason)

3. Capacity: Four racks (though with chickens, big roasts, shoulders and ribs you may only end up using two at a time. Still, I've loaded it up 30+lbs of meat at a time which for a product that often drops under $200 when on sale, is not bad at all.

4. Economy: It runs on electricity and with small amounts of wood relatively speaking. Rather than going through large amounts of wood and charcoal, you have a much more affordable smoke, which if you want to smoke regularly (or smoke small batches) is great.

5. Customer Support: You'll find repeated reviews of this online, but Masterbuilt's customer support is second to none. Its hard to find companies that stand behind their products the way Masterbuilt does. If something is defective, they will fix it with little to no questions asked.

So why don't I give it a 5 stars?

1. Size: Masterbuilt has a 40" version, but it is very hard to find. Really, if they made the 40" the standard, that extra little bit of space would allow you to use all four racks more often even with larger cuts.

2. Temperature Range: The Masterbuilt only goes up to 275. This is excellent for red meats which will often cook between 220 and 250 and fish, but not as good for poultry, where you want it up to 350 to get the fat in the skin to render (and avoid chewy skin).

3. Power: The Masterbuilt's electric heater sometimes doesn't seem to have quite enough oomph if you really load it with meat. I've had a hard time keeping the temp up when its full. There are people online who add their own heating elements to help boost it.

4. Needs direct plug: Masterbuilt requires you plug directly into an outlet. So, given the relatively short electrical cable that means you need to install an outdoors outlet if you believe them. I did use it fine with an industrial extension cord, but talking to their customer support, they felt it might be a reason for problem #3 above.

So, what do you have? A great form factor for a smoker, with good capacity, that maintains a set temperature, with multiple racks for different products, and that gives a consistently result. On the other hand, they have a slightly larger product that is only distributed much more limitedly, and they have odd limitations on the product based on max temp and wattage to the heating element. Given the price difference between the Masterbuilt and its nearest competitors, perhaps these limitations are forgivable. I still regularly recommend it to friends, and have many, including some who run a couple of well respected restaurants loving the products that come out.

Things I'd love to see from Masterbuilt as aftermarket products or even just upgrades:

1. External smoke box that attaches to the wood feed hole, so that you can do cold smokes for sausages, cheeses and salmon and other products.

2. A higher wattage heating element that can be swapped out for the standard one.

3. A higher max temperature so I don't need to take the chickens and game hens out 30 minutes before done and toss them in the oven to crisp the skins.

Regardless, to come full circle. If you want to dabble in smoking and are intimidated (which is easy), this is a perfect smoker to make things easy. And if you are experienced in smoking and just want to have either a more affordable smoke so you can do it more often, or a less labor intensive one, once in a while, this is the perfect supplement to your existing set up.

Nostalgia Electrics SM-500 All League Sliders Electric Mini Burger Maker Review

Nostalgia Electrics SM-500 All League Sliders Electric Mini Burger MakerI love sliders -at a bar or the addictive White Castle!I bought this sight unseen as gifts, and got one for myself too! My experience was great -- and it was a real hit as"just because" gifts. At the moment Amazon's price is LOWER than what it is selling for in department stores in my area, as well.

This unit cooks up the mini-burgers in minutes ( like maybe 3!!) and you can be as creative as you like-- I have mixed hamburger with onion soup mix, top with red onion and Fontina cheese, made mini-turkey burgers, and even sausage!Just get some mini-potato rolls and you are all set!

The mini-gourmet burgers seem to be everywhere, this unit makes them ultra easy to prepare at home. This is a great gift for seniors or teens- and most everyone in between. Sometimes kitchen gadgets are infrequently used -- but this is NOT one of those! The ease of use is the key here, once you try it-- you will see how easy it is to prepare a fast fresh meal or snack. 10,000 times better than microwave sliders ( and far less expensive, too)

I think the compact size is remarkable, and it takes up little space, which is a huge plus.

I am surprized this has not been super promoted as an infomercial or television shopping product. ( Maybe they are test marketing it? Maybe I missed it?) In some ways it reminds me of my 1st George Foreman grill -- this unit exceeds expectations, and is perfect!

Give it a try!YUM!

Char-Broil Patio Bistro Electric Grill Review

Char-Broil Patio Bistro Electric GrillI have had a Char Broil Electic Grill for almost two yearsnow. I recieve consistant results in summer and winter where thetempature differences have other grills difficult to use. I particully enjoy it when I use it to grill fish. Unlike gas grills the airflow inside an electric grill is almost non-existant. This translates to cooked but moist meats. This grill is easy to clean, and I don't have to remember to trun off the propane at the tank. refilled. The grill is easy to movearound the outside of my house depending on where I want to either just cook for the family, or to the backyard to entertain guests. I have used wood to add smoke flavor even though Char Broil recommends aganist it. I just place the wood chips on a small piece of metal on the heating element and everything is fine. The grill works a lot better if you clean it when it gets blackened inside, and the fact that I add wood chips does accelerate this process. It is not a difficilt task to clean the grill.
This grill is great when you are in a hurry too, electricy is fast. The best outdoor cooking product I have ever owned.

Calphalon 1759546 Electric Panini Grill Review

Calphalon 1759546 Electric Panini GrillI haven't met panini that I didn't like, yet! This is a GREAT sandwich maker! I haven't used it for grilling meat, because I like to keep the mess on the outdoor gas grill. The sandwiches come out evenly cooked to perfection-no flipping sandwiches and having all the fillings fall out!. It fits 2 large panini. You can adjust the height to fit the thickness of your sandwich. It's easy to clean-just wipe with a damp cloth while warm. Locks shut and easy to store. A nice little investment for your kitchen. ~ I also purchased through Amazon the cookbook, 'Panini' by Jennifer Joyce. Majority of the recipes have 5 fillings or less. Includes breakfast and dessert panini.

Weber 566002 Q 220 Gas Grill Review

Weber 566002 Q 220 Gas GrillFirst off, let me say I love this grill. It is fantastic.
Cons:
-Grill is a little on the heavy side.Cast iron grate, quality components and a sturdy base all combine to make this a little heavier than other portable grills. This is compared to my last portable grill, a shoddy lightweight grill made by Coleman.

Pros:
-Cast iron cooking surface. This is my first time with cast iron as opposed to the skinny stainless steel wires that most grills have.I'll never go back.
-Solid construction.Every piece looks and feels like it was made with quality materials.
-Two side tables. What can I say, they're extra useful
-Thermometer
-Taller grill lid than the q200 series.Lets you cook a larger roast or something else tall.Probably wont fit a Beer can chicken though (although I'm definitely going to try)
-Utensil hooks for grilling tools
-Precision flame control
-Fits a variety of propane tanks (you may need the adapter, sold separately)
-Has an excellent line up of accessories.I've also go the rolling cart on the way, it looks great.

Don't forget to buy the duffel or vinyl cover if you're going to be storing this outside. You wouldn't want dust and pet hair to cover your hardcore grilling machine.

100% satisfied, A+ product.

Followup (April 6, 2010):
I ended up buying a couple of accessories that I think really bring this grill together. We live in a apartment, and I find each of these to be indispensable:
Weber 6551 Vinyl Cover for Weber Q, Q-200, and Q-220 Gas Grills
Weber 6507 Rolling Cart
Weber 6503 Q Handle Light

Breville 800GRXL Die-Cast Indoor Barbeque and Grill Review

Breville 800GRXL Die-Cast Indoor Barbeque and GrillI love this grill.Yes, it's big, but for a family of four that's good.Problem? The non-stick surface is beginning to bubble after only 9 months of light use.At first, I thought it was just food left on the grill, but, alas, it is the surface coming away.It might be possible to make the grill last another year or so, if one were careful, but I don't think this should happen so soon.I don't think I have used it more than 25 times.I have sent an email to Breville asking for information on returns/repairs.I'll update this post after they respond (assuming they do).

UPDATE:

I contacted Breville via email, and they promptly replied with information on how to send it back.Assuming they concur with my assessment of the bubbling problem, I should receive a replacement. Can't ask for better customer service than that!A+

Total Chef TCG08G-CA 4IN1 Sandwich, Waffle, Grill & Griddle**EDIT:My first review I gave it five stars b/c it worked great for a few weeks.I can't change the stars to one now, so I will just update my review summary. After about a month of use, we discovered the coating must not be that high of quality on the plates. I had major peeling off on the grill plates while making a panini.I contacted Koolatron and they sent replacement plates after I emailed them a copy of my receipt. However the replacement plates peeled again after a couple uses. Then the grand finale, THE MACHINE DIED ONE YEAR AFTER PURCHASE. Piece of junk.

Wolfgang Puck WPRGG0010 1800-Watt Reversible Nonstick Grill and Griddle Review

Wolfgang Puck WPRGG0010 1800-Watt Reversible Nonstick Grill and GriddleI like it.The next best thing to a commercial-grade grill. The entire surface temperature appears to be even as I don't see a difference in how quickly items cook on one side versus the other or the edges versus the middle.Any griddle you buy will be a pain to clean (isn't cleaning ALWAYS a PAIN?) but this one cleans relatively easy. The griddle/grill lifts off the base and there is a drip-pan underneath that is also removable.
Only problem I have, which is not really a problem with the griddle, is that I can't be running too many items in the kitchen while I use it because it will trip the Kitchen Outlets' circuit breaker.

Brinkmann 810-7080-6 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill, Black Review

Brinkmann 810-7080-6 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill, BlackI ordered this item for my parents and had it sent directly to their house. After they had it mostly assembled, they realized the grill top has a dent in it and the water pan is dented and looks like it has been re-painted in places.Overall, the grill is still functional, but I am very disappointed to receive a damaged item (obviously not shipping damage) that was sold as NEW but looks more to be a fefurb..

Weber 516002 Q 120 Gas Grill Review

Weber 516002 Q 120 Gas GrillThe Weber Q120 is a fantastic little grill. As a vegetarian, I wasn't sure just how much I'd actually use a grill, and didn't want to BBQ on something that felt unstable or flimsy... well... I've had the grill for almost a month now and I think I've only missed grilling 2 of those days.

Veggie kabobs are a breeze (it holds 6 perfectly) as are bocaburgers, tofurkey beer brats, and jumbo dogs.I'm sure for my carniverous friends, it would work equally well.

I'm loving it so much I just ordered a cookbook today for vegetarian grilling so that I can expand my repetoire (sic).

Best Features:
- easy to put together
- cast iron grate
- shape/size
- fantastic electric starter that doesn't have an 'explosive' start to it

It is worth the price... I think it will last a good long time.

George Foreman GR1212 Jumbo-Size Electric Nonstick Contact Grill Review

George Foreman GR1212 Jumbo-Size Electric Nonstick Contact GrillWe bought this grill to replace our old GF grill that was about 10 years old.We use this several times a week, and I really miss the old grill.
This does cook meat really quickly, but it lacks a timer and a temperature option that our old GF grill did have.It will burn meat very quickly and puts out a lot of smoke b/c it cooks too fast. This is the only jumbo size, so I guess it will have to do for now.If a timer and temp option were on here, it would make a big difference.

DeLonghi CGH800-U Retro Panini Grill Review

DeLonghi CGH800-U Retro Panini GrillI used to be a restaurant owner and chef, serving great toasted sandwiches from several commercial sandwich presses with flat plates and I really missed them after I left the business. After much consideration and reading reviews, I hesitatingly bought this unit due to mostly 5 star reviews. The Delonghi has a nice feature in the temperature control and overall build quality, however after making one sandwich I realized its serious shortcomings which I suspect is common to all grooved griddles.

I do not understand the consumer fascination or hype for grill marks on sandwiches just so that you can get that Italian "Panini" look. Grill marks may look cute but they are a functional waste for a toasted sandwich. The problem is that the deep impression made in the bread causes an uneven heating of the bread surface and ingredients underneath. I made a classic Rueben with rye, big eye swiss, corned beef, kraut and thousand island dressing. The ridges pushed deeply enough into the bread to cause the cheese to melt through the bread where the untoasted surface was between the grooves. So the grooves were toasting but not the between where the cheese soaked through. ALso consider that rye is more dense than typical sandwich bread and it still did not withstand this process. The sandwich ended up a soggy mess within about 3-4 minutes and would not come out of the press very easily due to the deep grooves where the softer bread "gave up" and simply started falling apart from being soaked. So I returned the unit, unsatisfied with the results.

I then promptly replaced Delonghi with my second choice for which I should have trusted my initial instincts. I got the Breville unit because it is about the only one on the market that has flat griddle plates top and bottom for a truly even toasting over the entire surface of the sandwich. The heat level is perfect and the surface area is larger than the Delonghi and it will actually accommodate 4 sandwiches at one time. The bottom plate features a raised lip around the perimeter to contain ingredients that may run out or for cooking meat. You can leave the sandwich in longer than the Delonghi to allow a more crusty surface if desired or more heat to the interior ingredients without burning anything. It is very forgiving on cook time so it would be hard to ruin anything cooked in it. I have also found it wonderful for cooking hamburger patties. And it does it very quickly. A third to half pound pattie will cook in 3-5 minutes, cooking both sides at one time. Not to mention that my Rueben now comes out perfect. I have also cooked Tyson marinated chicken breasts in it, with great results. And will next try sirloin steak cuts, which I am sure will yield excellent results.

The Breville also has a stair step slider lid support on the side handle to allow you to set variable thicknesses for ingredients to avoid smashing your panini or toasted sandwiches to cardboard thin slices of bread. Also allows for great pizza reheating to crisp the crust on the bottom plate and setting the lid to the open "radiant heat" melt position, hovering to warm the topside ingredients while the crust does its thing. All in all, a much superior choice unless you like "tire rut" sandwiches. I am very impressed with this unit which performs as well as the $600 commercial units we used in my restaurant.

Brinkmann 810-7080-7 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill with Vinyl Cover, Black Review

Brinkmann 810-7080-7 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill with Vinyl Cover, BlackAlthough I have previously owned a similar Brinkman Elcetric Smoker with a temp control dial and a thermometer, this new smoker appears to have been designed and built by people who have virtually no idea of the word craftsmanship.Besides having a missing part from the sealed plastic bag, I had to bend all three handles so I could line up the pre-drilled screw holes.I had to jerryrig a missing V clip--a support for the water pan.Because of all this, it took more than two hours to assemble.Shoddy workmanship, no temp gage, and no heat control make it a reach for me to even give this smoker two stars.

Weber 751001 22.5 inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill, BlackYou're probalby thinking that there's no reason to update the 10-year-old Weber you've got in your back yard.Well, turns out Weber has made some smart improvements over the years-- the new "gold" model is worth the upgrade.
The ash-catcher is super, the one-touch vent system is abig improvement (no more knocking each vent with a trowel), the plastichandles stay cooler... you get the idea.Nothing dramatic, but goodprogress.
But here's the clincher: setting one of these up (takes about20 minutes, even if you make a mistake or two) just makes you feel likeyou're in heaven. It's summer embodied.People rhapsodize about the newcar small... well, fughettaboutit. The look of a shiny new grill thatyou've assembled yourself is about as good as it gets.
Highlyrecommended accessory: the charcoal companion.Put your lighter fluid (oryour MatchLight) away and use this instead-- it works flawlessly, and it'sbetter for theenvironment.

Hamilton Beach 25450 Gourmet Panini Press Review

Hamilton Beach 25450 Gourmet Panini PressYou can't give this machine a bad rating. This Hamilton Beach Panini Press does one thing and one thing only, but it does it very well. If you enjoy pressed/grilled sandwhiches you will love this machine. As I write this I'm eating a feta/olive/artichoke/roasted peppers on pita sandwhich hot off the panini press, and it's scrumptious. I actually bought this as a christmas gift for my mother, but I probably use it more than she does.

The machine looks good on the counter, and has a large, non stick service. It's not on a hinge so it's designed to accept even the thickest sandwhiches without squeezing all the filling out. You can even "lock" the lid down to apply constant pressure, or lock it up to maintain minimal pressure or to not make contact with the top at all. It's great for quesidillas as well. Ignore the user that says it takes too long to heat up, it takes only a couple of minutes, about the time a waffle maker would take to heat. Even cooking on the stove you need to take a few mins to heat the pan! Also ignore the comment that this machine burns the bread before heating the filling, I've never had such problems, although I do wish there was a temperature control for further versatillity. But my bread never burns... I find 2-6 min will brown the bread perfectly, from lightly browned to nice and crispy (depending on how you like it) without burning it at all. I've never burned anything on this machine. I even once used it to grill some chicken, and it did the job nicely, though it's not really designed for that.

The only down sides are that there are no frills. I've seen other models that come with nice recipe books, this one has just a few hastily thrown together recipe ideas in the instruction booklet. There's no temp control either, which is fine, but it would be nice to have some kind of control (it would be more convenient if you wanted to use it for alternative purposes. The machine gets very hot, but that's to be expected. There's no alternate "plates" or cooking surfaces for say a flat "griddle" style surface, so you'll have to settle for the striated grate style surface, which in all honestly is not a big deal at all.

This is a great machine, at a decent price. It could be better with a temp control, some extra features, and a better recipe book, but all-in-all, you can't complain. It does its job, and does it very well.

Brinkmann 810-7080-8 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill with Vinyl Cover, Red Review

Brinkmann 810-7080-8 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill with Vinyl Cover, RedI have owned this smoker for 5 years now and have a few insights for those looking to purchase this smoker.

I have smoked7 turkeys, alot of pork, and some beef all with really great results.

I love that its electric. Regulating temp with charcoal smokers can be tedious. You barely have to do anything to it except add water and chips. It will maintain the ideal temperature of 220 degrees fairly well, But there are a few issues with this smoker:

1. Materials and construction- metal is thin and the lid fits loosely. The lid is suppose to fit loosely! There is no vent so it helps with the smoke. But because the metal is thin, on cold and/or windy days, it can be difficult for it to maintain it's temp on long smokes. Often runs 200-210 degrees. This will increase your cooking time! On hot days it will run at 230- 240 degrees. Although I can't reccomend this modification to help with heat loss, I have actually heard of people fitting a electric water heating blanket to the outside of the smoker to help with this.

2. I wish the heating element was adjustable to help regulate the temp.

3. The door is small which makes it hard to add chips or water. Although you can take the unit off its base to add chips, this is akward and a bit dangerous since you may spill the water. It is nice to remove the base to help clean the unit though.

4. I installed an after market temp. gauge in the lid. (A must)

Overall a good entry level smoker that is super easy to use. Got mine at W-mart for $75. Anyhow, it's a great value for under a $100. Now after 5 years, it is about done and I need a new smoker. I will try to upgrade although after looking around at all the electric smokers, I might just buy another one of these. I love the "bullet" design of the vertical smokers.

The stainless steel version of this model looks nice and is obviously made of better material, but the main section is attacted to the base. I do like being able to remove the base. Plus the element is still not adjustable. The only other choice is astainless steel meco smoker which has a better door design and a adjustable heating element, but is double the price. So I will either get this model again and do some modifications (temp gauge and maybe an adjustable element) or get the meco. Hope this review helps.

Meco 5030 Electric Grill and Combination Water Smoker Review

Meco 5030 Electric Grill and Combination Water SmokerFirst, let me say that my husband and I are smoker morons - we need a book titled 'Smokers for Dummies'.But, we have always wanted a smoker, and in researching the electric version of this little unit, I found lots of people were happy with it.I also noticed that it can be converted to charcoal (or vice versa for the charcoal unit) with a conversion kit available from the manufacturer. For the charcoal version, I was concerned about having to watch the coals for hours to assure proper heat, and being able to control the 220 degree temperature which is perfect for smoking. After using this little puppy for the first time, I am quite impressed with it.The thermostat allows for constant temperature control, and allows you to go about your life instead of baby sitting a smoker all day.

The large box arrived with lots of parts, but was assembled in about an hour - the instructions were very good.We immediately put a beef brisket into the unit, turned it on, and added mesquite chunks. The unit came with some hickory chumks to get you started, but we will use those later I presume. The neighborhood smelled like a BBQ pit, and everyone came to see what was going on.Talk about a make-shift party! The 4.5 pound brisket took around 4 hours to cook.Hindsite, I would have brined the brisket prior to smoking it to help it retain more moisture, but it was not that dry at the end.A little BBQ sauce on the cooked meat handled that problem.

The unit recommends using wood chunks, not chips. It tells you to put the chunks on top of the electric coils. Not only did I find this difficult to do (balance the wood on the electric coils) but I found that even after soaking the chunks for a hour or more, I had to replace them every hour or so (I used 2 each time). They tended to burn up, and I suspect that is why the brisket was a bit dry (that, and I bought the brisket at a super market near-by who sells 'select' meat, so there was little if any marbling in the meat).

But the taste and the flavor of the brisket was great.Lots of mesquite smoke flavor. We sliced it very thin (as I had said, the meat had little marbling, so tenderness was not the poor brisket's forte).Added some BBQ sauce, and served it up with potatoes, beans and corn bread. As good as any high priced BBQ pit in the area.I was thoroughly pleased.

My one neighbor was shocked that we would purchase an electric version of this unit.He has a charcoal one.He said 'You will miss all of the the flavor with electric! Why not just steam the meat?'.Well, he ate those words right after he ate some of the brisket. We actually got more flavor out of this unit than he gets from his charcoal one because it is difficult to add wood to his, and simple to add it to this one!I would challenge anyone who says you can not get flavor from an electric smoker if you use wood to flavor the meat.

On the positive side of this unit:Great flavor, simple to assemble (allow an hour and have a screw driver and a pliers ready), easy to use (no replacing charcoal), the water container is 5.5 quarts - enough for 5 hours of smoking, doors to add additional wood or water as needed, the bullet shape is attractive on the patio, it has a thermostat and a temperature gauge (although the settings are only low/medium/high and warm/ideal/hot respectively this seems to be adequate), easy to clean, you can add wood and water without removing the cover or meat - heat loss is minimal, .

On the negative side of this unit:There are some gaps where the lid sits on the top of the unit so some smoke is lost (on the plus side, this attracts curious neighbors!), the instructions are for the charcoal version - not the electric one - you are pretty much on your own, it tends to run a bit hot so once heated I would recommend turning the control to 'medium-high' to continue the cooking and maintain that 220 degree temperature, it burned up the wood chunks instead of allowing them to smolder - decreasing the temperature should help this some, cleaning the bottom bowl requires loosening the electric element to remove the pan - although cleaning this is not necessary each time you use it, some of the body parts were a bit bent when it arrived even though the box was fine - a pliers fixed this problem.

I would recommend this unit to even a novice smoker. We had great success with this unit and our first smoking episode, and plan to use it throughout the year for smoking beef, pork, fish and fowl.It also has instructions for smoking cheese and nuts if that is your liking.

When smoking, I recommending having a pair of tongs to add wood to the fire if you like a heavy smoke taste - makes it easier adding the wood through the available door.

Gee, I wonder what smoked beer would taste like?

George Foreman Next Grilleration 4-Burger Grills with Removable Plates Review

George Foreman Next Grilleration 4-Burger Grills with Removable PlatesWe bought this model after dropping and breaking our ($[...]) George Foreman "Champ" grill.
Pros:
-The removable grilling plates come off and go on easily, and cleaning them in the sink or dishwasher is a breeze. The base unit doesn't even get dirty!
- Non-stick grilling plates are sufficiently large to cook hamburgers for three or four people.
- Fat drips into the provided tray with no leaking out the back or sides.
- Floating hinges allow varying thicknesses of food to be held tight on the top and bottom.
- Total time to cook, once unit is fully heated, is faster than broiling the burgers in our electric oven and the grill uses far less power.
- Light enough to hold with one hand, for easy storing.
- Unit lacks a thermometer and temperature control, neither of which is needed for most things.Price is lower as a result.
- Easy, fast, and inexpensive method to cook many foods (chicken breasts, burgers, hot-dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc.).
Cons:
- The first time we used a Grilleration to cook hamburgers, we put them on when the temperature light said the grill was hot (around the 7 minute mark), as per the instructions.Instead of grilling the burgers, it slow-cooked them.We suspected this was happening, since there was no "sizzle" sound while cooking. The worst of it was, the burgers had almost no taste, as though they had been baked.Next time, we let the grill heat up for a full 15 minutes before putting the meat on.The plates got much hotter, and, as a result, the burgers sizzled. They also tasted much better.
- Even pre-heating for 15 minutes, this model doesn't get as hot as the $[...] George Foreman Champ model.Further, the plates don't stay as hot during the cooking cycle as the cheaper unit, especially if the grilling plates are covered with food (e.g., 4 hamburgers). This is easily discernable as the "sizzle sound" dies out as the cooking progresses. There are two reasons the Champ gets hotter:
1.The Next Grilleration heating coils heat the sealed base unit, and transfers heat to the removable grilling plates, which are touching the base unit. The Champ system is more efficient, as its heating coils directly heat the non-removable plates.
2.The 760 watt Champ cooking area is 42 square inches, or 18 watts per sq. inch. The 1000 watt Next Grilleration cooking area is 72 square inches, or 14 watts per sq. inch.(That's 1000 claimed watts.According to a Kill-a-Watt meter, our Grilleration actually draws 955 watts.)
The Grilleration would need to be in the 1400 watt range to cook as hot as the Champ.
Summary:
- Foods needing high heat to grill taste better with the hotter operating Champ model.
- Champ's cooking area is 42 sq. in. versus 72 sq. in. for the Grilleration.
- The Champ is a pain to clean since you can't submerge the base unit, whereas cleaning the Grilleration plates is simple.
Recommendation:
If taste is most important, get the Champ model, or, if it's too small, buy two Champs (for less money than one Grilleration).
If ease of cleaning is most important, buy a Grilleration or other [larger] unit with removable grilling plates.

Homeimage USA iEG-100 Electric Indoor Raclette Barbeque Grill Review

Homeimage USA iEG-100 Electric Indoor Raclette Barbeque GrillRaclette is related to Swiss Fondue and is another Swiss cheese tradition. Originally, raclette was mountain cheese held near a fire and the melted part of the block scraped off onto a plate with potatoes and gherkins. Now, it's a fancy grill used for parties with trays beneath a heating element to melt cheese, and a grill on top of the element to cook sausages, shrimp, meats, veggies, pineapple, and even crepes. This raclette grill has some notable advantages:

1. It's oval, meaning it will work on a round table as people can access their melting trays from all sides.

2. It has a pancake and grill portion on the top grill.

3. It's very affordable.

If you want stone and not teflon, this isn't the one you want, but considering its advantages and that it is a great price for what might be only a party appliance, you can't go wrong. For round tables, it's a must.

Presto 07030 Cool Touch 20-Inch Electric Griddle, Black Review

Presto 07030 Cool Touch 20 inch Electric Griddle, BlackI bought this griddle for yakiniku, which is a great way to entertain guests, but I have found that I have been using it far more than anticipated.

Pros:

It's awesome to have a griddle in the kitchen.First and foremost, it's great being able to make more than one or two pancakes at a time.If you want to serve someone up a short stack, there is a lot of waiting using only two pans, but with this, you can crank out three good size cakes at the same time. Also, frying eggs and warming meat at the same time has saved me a lot of time in the mornings.

It's easy to clean. If you read the manual carefully, it suggests seasoning before use. This ensures a light coat of oil stays on it while it's being used.I've done this and NOTHING has stuck to the surface.I also give it a thorough scrub with either a dry paper towel or a wet one held with chopsticks after each use and it stays very clean.

It gets hot fast!Way faster than my range top and a pan, which also saves me time in the morning. This is mostly due to the light construction, but this can also contribute to un-even heating, which I have not yet had a problem with, although others have.

Its just more fun.Maybe this is helping me live out some long-lost short-order cook fantasies?= )

Cons:

As other reviewers have noted, it slides around a bit.I find myself lifting it up a bit on one side to both keep it in place and also to give the spatula better odds of sliding under an egg without breaking it.This is not a deal-breaking compensation, but rubber feet would have been nice here.

It tends to get pretty hot.The manual comes with cooking temps, but I found most of them to be a little high.Cooking a little more cool has helped things out for me.Again, this may be what has attributed to others' problems.

The bottom line here is that you get what you pay for. This is one of the cheaper models on the market, so I think it would be a little unrealistic to assume that the bargain model would deliver a top-of-the-line performance.I have had zero problems with mine so far, but I recognize that it clearly has some room for improvements.Until I want to shell out more than $30 for a small kitchen appliance, I'll be quite happy with this product.

Cuisinart GR-4N 5-in-1 Griddler Review

Cuisinart GR-4N 5-in-1 GriddlerI bought a G4 Griddler from Amazon in 2005, and used it a couple of times a week (at least) until it had to be put out to pasture in 2010 due to failure of the non-stick coating on the plates.(The coating started to bubble and peel, and no one wants that in their food...)I loved it. (See my review of the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler Stainless-Steel 4-in-1 Grill/Griddle and Panini Press) It was still working great, but replacement plates were not available.

I was elated when offered the opportunity to review its smarter younger brother, the GR-4NAM Griddler.I could hardly wait for it to get here and run it through its paces.

At first glance, the GR-4NAM looks virtually identical to the G4.However, closer inspection reveals that it has been totally redesigned, and for the better.

Improvement:The grease catcher used to be a little cup that had to be set under a spout on the side of the bottom plate. If it was positioned incorrectly, (or forgotten about), greased dripped out on the counter. The grease catcher is now integrated into the Griddler as a drawer-like device that can be pulled out to clean, and then put back in place for the next use.

Improvement:The original G4 had two sets of plates - one flat set, one ridged set (for paninis). There is now one reversible set of plates (ridged on one side, flat on the other), and therefore no need to find a storage place for the plates not in use.The new plates have a good substantial weight.I don't have the old ones here for comparison, but the quality of the plates certainly was not cheapened.

Improvement:It used to be a little tricky to put the plates in place and to remove them. There was also a difference between the top plate and the bottom, so you had to be careful not to try to put them in the wrong way.The plates now have an identical shape, so they are interchangeable, and the release buttons activate a spring-loaded mechanism that pops the plate loose for easy removal. Now, to see how it cooks:The Griddler takes about as long to warm up as a good-quality waffle iron.Just when you start to get impatient with it, it's ready.

The first thing that I cooked was a no-no in the eyes of Cuisinart - a bone-in, skin-on leg and thigh chicken quarter.Too thick, they say.HA! says I, because I am a bit of an anarchist.I marinated the chicken in olive oil and rosemary, heated the Griddler to Medium. I cooked it on the panini plates because I love those little fake barbeque stripes across my food.It worked just fine.(I should have taken a picture, it came out looking beautiful. But I was hungry.)

Word of warning:Do not cook thick or fatty meat on High - you will get grease spatters all over the place. Medium works just fine in such instances.

I discovered from my old Griddler that when cooking meat it's best to turn off the heat before it's done, and let it finish cooking with the residual heat in the plates. That way the meat does not get overdone.

For clean-up, I let the plates cool down, and then put a wet paper towel across the bottom plate and close the lid and let it sit for a while. The dampness softens anything that is stuck to the plates, and then it can be easily washed off with a sudsy sponge or dish wand.

Today for lunch, I made myself a sandwich with sliced sourdough bread, cooked sliced chicken breast, fresh grated parmesan cheese and dried basil.I followed the panini directions in the small cookbook that comes with the Griddler.Well, I sort of followed the directions...Cuisinart recommends brushing the outside of the sandwich with olive oil.I prefer to use melted butter on panini because it makes the sandwich crisper.

I preheated the Griddler on High, placed the sandwich inside, and applied light pressure for about 30 seconds, and then let it cook. The directions say to cook panini for about 4 -5 minutes, but my sandwich was ready to eat in 2 minutes.Maybe the butter makes the bread brown faster than olive oil.

In any case, it was beautiful - evenly browned, crunchy and delicious, and I did take a picture (see product images).

How durable will the GR-4NAM be?Good question. From everything that I can see so far, Cuisinart has only made the Griddler better. But time is the real test of quality. I will report back from time to time regarding durability.

Right now, I'd say this looks like an excellent buy.

The Griddler's Many Uses
Contact Grill
Use the Griddler as a contact grill to cook burgers, boneless pieces of meat and thin cuts of meat and vegetables. The contact grill function works best when you want to cook something in a short amount of time or when you are looking for a healthy method of grilling. When cooked on the contact grill, food will cook quickly because you are grilling both sides of the food at the same time. The ribs on the grill side of the plates, combined with the grease spout at the rear of the plate, allow the grease to drip from the meat and drain off the plates. When the Griddler is used as a contact grill, the grill side of plates is recommended. Rest the cover evenly on top of the food until it has reached the desired cooked temperature. The Griddler was designed with a unique handle and hinge that allow the cover to adjust to the thickness of the food. You can easily grill anything from a thinly sliced potato to a thick sirloin steak with even results. When cooking more than one food item in the contact grill, it is important that the thickness of food items is consistent so the cover will close evenly on the food.
Panini Press
Use the Griddler as a panini press to grill sandwiches, breads, and quesadillas. The sandwich is pressed between two grill or griddle plates to toast the bread and warm the sandwich. We recommend using fresh-baked bread to produce the best tasting panini. Popular breads used for panini are focaccia (a flat bread frequently baked with rosemary, salt and onion on top), michetta (a small round roll with a crisp crust), ciabatta (a rectangular bread with a slightly domed crust), and thick slices of classic Italian bread. When the Griddler is used as a panini press, the grill side of the plates is recommended. We recommend the grill side of the plates because traditional style panini sandwiches have grill marks on the bread. However, depending upon the type of sandwich you are preparing, you may wish to use the griddle side of the plates or any combination of the two. The Griddler functions as a panini press in the same manner that it functions as a contact grill. The Griddler was designed with a unique handle and hinge that allow the cover to adjust to the thickness of the sandwich you are preparing, and to rest there evenly.Light pressure can be applied to the handle to press and heat the sandwich to your liking. When cooking two or more panini, it is important that the thickness of the sandwiches is consistent so the cover will close evenly on the panini.
Full Grill
Use the Griddler as a full grill to cook burgers, steak, poultry (we do not recommend cooking bone-in chicken, since it does not cook evenly on a full grill), fish, and vegetables. Full grill refers to using the Griddler with the cover lying flat, creating a double, flat cooking surface. In this position, the foods you are grilling will have to be turned over for cooking. When the Griddler is used as a full grill, the grill side of the plates should be used. Cooking on the full grill is the most versatile method of using the Griddler. With the full grill, you have double the surface area (200 square inches) for grilling. You have the option of cooking different types of foods on separate plates without combining their flavors, or cooking large amounts of the same type of food. The full grill also accommodates different cuts of meats with varying thickness, allowing you to cook each piece to your liking.
Full Griddle
Use the Griddle as a full griddle to cook pancakes, eggs, French toast, hash browns, and breakfast meats. When you use the Griddler as a full griddle, open the cover so it lies flat, creating a double, flat cooking surface. In this position, the foods you are preparing will have to be turned over for cooking. When using this cooking function, the griddle side of the plates should be used. Cooking on the full griddle is a wonderful way to prepare breakfast for two or for a large family. The large surface area allows you to cook a variety of different foods at the same time, or large amounts of your favorite food.
Half Grill/Half Griddle
Use the Griddler as a half grill/half griddle in order to create full meals like bacon and eggs or steak and potatoes at the same time. When using the Griddler as a half grill/half griddle, simply place the unit in the flat position and insert one plate with the grill side facing up and another plate with the griddle side facing up.This cooking option allows you to use either the grill/panini temperature or the griddle temperature selector.
To Insert Cooking Plates
Adjust the Griddler to the flat position with the controls directly in front of you.Insert one plate at a time. Each plate is designed to fit in either the upper housing or the lower housing of the Griddler. If you are facing the Griddler, the drip spout should be at the rear of the plate.Locate the metal brackets at the center of the housing.Tilt the back end of the plate and line up the cutouts at the back of the plate with metal brackets.Slide the plate underneath the brackets and push down the front end of the plate. It will snap into place.Turn the Griddler around and insert the second plate on either its grill or griddle side into the upper housing as you did with the first plate.
To Remove Cooking Plates
Once the Griddler is cooled, adjust to flat position.Locate the plate release button on one side of the unit.Press firmly on button and the plate will pop up slightly from the base.Grasp the plate with two hands, slide it out from under the metal brackets, and lift it out of the base.Press on the other plate release button to remove the other cooking plate in the same manner.
Drip Tray
The drip tray is located on one side of the base inside the slot.Grease from the food will run off the plates through the grease spout and into the drip tray.In between recipes, use a wooden or heat-proof plastic utensil to scrape excess food buildup through the grease channels and into the drip tray, and then wipe off any residue with a paper towel before proceeding with the next recipe.Grease should be safety disposed of after the Griddler has cooled down completely. The drip tray can be cleaned by hand or in the dishwasher and stored in the Griddler when not in use.
Cleaning and Care
Once you have finished cooking, turn the selector dial control to the Off position and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.Allow the unit to cool down for least 30 minutes before handling. Use the cleaning/scraping tool to remove any leftover food from the cooking plate. The scraping tool can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher.Dispose of grease from the drip tray once cooled. The drip tray can be cleaned by hand or in the dishwasher.Press the plate release buttons to remove plates from the housing.Be sure that the plates have cooled completely before handling (at least 30 minutes). The cooking plates can be washed in the dishwasher. The housing base, cover and control knobs can be wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth. For tough stains, dampen cloth.

Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Baker Review

Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle BakerI love this waffle maker! It's like the ones our mom used, not those cheesy seeming plastic things they're making now. It's also got a lot of excellent features that make my life easier.
I'll mention right now that this is a VERY hot waffle maker. They make the plastic ones to be "cool touch".I'll trade the cool touch feature for the sturdier design of this versatile machine. I'm being careful and haven't burned myself yet. But it's something to consider if you'd like your children making waffles. My ten year old could be careful enough, but I keep my five and eight year olds away.
The waffles this machine makes are great! They freeze well too.The family is very happy. When the light goes of the unit is ready to make waffles. Pour in the batter and the light comes on again--wait for it to go off and the waffle is done (however, I usually go on instinct and sometimes pull out the waffle before the light goes off.)
The open grill feature makes wonderful pancakes and fried eggs.I have a big family and it's nice to have two pancakes cook at a shot without taking up all my stovetop!I can have bacon and eggs on the stove and the pancakes on the waffle maker.(I can also have a heart attack if I keep eating all these bacon and eggs!)
The sandwich feature is nice.I can cook two grilled cheese sandwiches at one time getting me out of the kitchen quicker. Some advice--cheese might drip out the side of the sandwich.Just keep the sandwich away from the back of the unit where the cables run in and the mess just wipes off--no problem. The sandwiches cook far more uniformly than they do in a pan on the stove. They taste great.
This unit cleans up easily and changing the grills from waffle to flat is easy.I recommend it over a lot of more costly models if you want more value for your money. This is the most versatile waffle maker I've found and all the features actually work!

George Foreman GR236CTR G-Broil Cool-Touch Electric Nonstick Countertop Grill, Red Review

George Foreman GR236CTR G-Broil Cool-Touch Electric Nonstick Countertop Grill, RedI have owned 2or3 other GF grills over the years. As my children or neices went to college I would give them the one from my kitchen -- then I would buy the newest model.I love the color and the features:cord wrap, stand up storage, lid that can be adjusted for thicker food, etc.

My 17 year old neice is already asking if she can have it when she goes to college.I don't know, I may have to get her a new one this time because I really like this model, its just the right size for us empty nesters.

It is a breeze to clean -just wipe with a damp cloth or towel after unplugging. If you have owned a GF in the past and don't mind cleaning up after cooking you will be fine with this grill.Amazon's great customer service and prices makes this a best buy.
